On July 26th, Gary Van Arnam, Dr. Richard Mungo and Elizabeth Dunne were elected to serve as officers for the Board of Directors. Jack Shaw, Founding Board President will continue to serve on the Board of Directors as Immediate Past President.




John C. (Jack) Shaw
Immediate Past President

Jack Shaw retired as Vice Chairman after a 30-year career at Deloitte & Touche. Following his retirement he served as Executive Vice President at WellPoint Health Network and as Dean of the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.

Mr. Shaw was the Founding President of Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County and is currently serving as the Immediate Past President on their Executive Committee. Currently, Mr. Shaw serves as the Chairman of the Governance Committee of the Board of Directors of Resources Connection, Inc., a public company as well as Chairman of the El Viento Foundation. Mr. Shaw is a graduate of American International College and Claremont Graduate University. He has written several books on management subjects and has lectured widely on topics of corporate governance and leadership.

Gary Van Arnam, CFP
Northern Trust

Board President

Gary L. Van Arnam is employed with Northern Trust and has over 18 years trust and estate planning experience.

Gary is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Financial Management. He completed the Financial Planning Program at University of Southern California and the National Graduate Trust School of the American Bankers Association with Honors. Gary is actively involved in a number of professional and charitable organizations including serving as the Past President for both Human Options, the Planned Giving Round Table of Orange County and the Estate Planning and Trust Council of Long Beach. In addition to Healthy Smiles, Gary is involved with the Hoag Hospital Foundation.

Richard P. Mungo, D.D.S., M.S.D., M.Ed.
Pediatric Dentist

Board Vice President

Dr. Richard Mungo, a founding board member of Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County, is a Pediatric Dentist practicing in Huntington Beach, California. Dr. Mungo currently serves as the Medical Director for the clinical practice at Healthy Smiles. He also serves as part time faculty in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry ad USC School of Dentistry and as a guest lecturer in the Department of Hospital Dentistry at UCLA School of Dentistry.

Dr. Mungo is a graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry. He completed his pediatric residency at Boston University (Goldman) School of Graduate Dentistry and completed a fellowship at USC/Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Craniofacial Anomalies. Additionally, Dr. Mungo received his Masters in Medical Education from USC School of Medicine. From 1978 to 1993 Dr. Mungo served as the Department Chair of Pediatric Dentistry at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles associated with USC School of Dentistry. Dr. Mungo has published in areas of cleft palate therapy, conducted original research and published protocols for use of lasers in dentistry, and published in various areas of hospital dentistry and oral complications of AIDS in the pediatric population.

Dr. Mungo is past president of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (2002) and inaugural president of the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry (2002). He is member of the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (2003 to present) and served in the House of Delegates for the California Dental Association (2001 & 2002). He is also past president of the American Society of Dentistry for Children (1998). Dr. Mungo is a fellow of the American Academy of Laser Dentistry, a member of the Academy of Sports Dentistry, a fellow of the American Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, a member of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the American/International Cleft Palate Association and the Federation of Special Care Organizations in Dentistry.

Dr. Mungo has been awarded multiple honors including the Harold McAllister Chair in Dentistry, the Morris and Mary Press Humanism Award, and the L.I.F.E. Achievement Award 1996 in recognition for outstanding dedication and service to those with developmental disabilities.

In addition to his commitment to Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County,
Dr. Mungo serves and has served over many years his community through services as a Board member and/or Officer for many organizations including the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the International Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Association, the United Cerebral Palsy Association, Special Needs Advocates for Parents, the Los Angeles Head Start Program, Los Angeles Olympic Committee, Boys Scouts of America.

Dr. Mungo states his achievement deserving special recognition is his family.

Elizabeth Dunne
Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer
Anaheim Memorial Medical Center

Board Secretary and Treasurer

Liz Dunne joined Memorial Health Services in1995 and has served as the Anaheim Memorial Medical Center (AMMC) Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (SVP/COO) for this 224-bed, community, not-for-profit, acute-care hospital since 1999. Liz has more than 20 years' experience in hospital operations, financial management, marketing, strategic planning, hospital acquisitions, mergers and turnarounds.   She was a key leader with responsibility for the vision and operational strategy that recently earned Anaheim Memorial Medical Center a Top 100 Hospital National Award Recognition for quality by Total Benchmark Solutions in 2005 as well as the 2005 VHA Clinical Excellence Green Light Award.

Liz established and co-chaired the Anaheim Memorial Medical Center Governing Board Strategic Planning Committee that focuses on anticipating community needs and prioritizing strategies that address the challenges of the future.  During the past five years, Liz successfully developed yearly tactics, goals and business plans, achieving more than 95% of the established objectives each year.

Prior to before becoming SVP/COO,  Liz was the AMMC Vice President of Operations where she led a major financial turnaround and created two new outpatient clinics that increased growth and patient visits by 28%.  In 1998 as part of an expansion of Women's Health Services in the Anaheim area, Liz developed a state-of-the-art breast care cancer center with 6,000 square-feet of comprehensive facilities. She obtained private funding, grants and first-year operating and construction costs totaling over $700,000.  Portrayed as an overwhelming success within the healthcare community, breast care center patient visits have increased 30% saving numerous lives and the center is now ranked as one of the top 10 programs within the United States.

Before joining the Memorial Health Care System in 1995, Liz was General Manager of Hospitality Services for the Marriott Corporation, Marriott Management Services at Redlands Community Hospital, Redlands, California and later at UCI Medical Center in Orange, California. In 1991 Liz was recalled to military active duty status in the United States Air Force to support Operation Desert Storm. Liz's military career spanned over 20 years including 10 years active duty as an Air Force officer in hospital administration at a number of Air Force hospitals throughout the United States followed by reserve status is a similar capacity. Liz retired from the US Air Force Reserves as a Lt. Colonel.

Liz holds a bachelor's of science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Queens College and a Master's in Business and Computer Resource Management from Webster University. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Hospital Council of Southern California Orange County Executive and Planning. She is also a Governing Board Member and Finance Committee Chairman for Healthy Smiles, a community organization promoting and providing dental services for underserved children in Orange County, California.

Pat Halberstadt
Chief Professional Officer
Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove

Pat Halberstadt, Chief Professional Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove for more than 28 years, is a lifelong resident of the community served by the organization she leads.

Believing that she would likely spend her entire career in an elementary school classroom, she decided to take a "short break" from teaching in 1974, when she accepted a position in her hometown as Executive Director for the Girls Club of Garden Grove – she has never left the "exciting world of non-profits"!

Currently, Pat is a member of the State School- Age Care Advisory Committee, on the Steering Committee for Boys and Girls Clubs of America Safety and Child Welfare Programs, Member and Former-Chair of the Council of Funded Organizations for United Way of Orange County, an agency representative to the United Way Board of Directors and its Executive Board.

Pat is an ardent advocate for children and youth of all ages, especially the great necessity for quality programs which support the needs of today's kids and their families. Her motto is: "Children are such a great way to start people!"

Donald B. Murray

Resources Global Professionals

Donald B. Murray is chief executive officer of an international professional services firm, Resources Connection, which provides finance & accounting, human resources, IT and internal audit services on a project basis.

The company was founded as a division of Deloitte & Touche. After a management buy-out led by Mr. Murray and two other founders, Resources Connection went public in December 2000. Mr. Murray leads the company's more than 60 domestic and international offices.

He earned his BS from California State University and his Masters in Business Taxation from the University of Southern California. He is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, Orange County Business Council and Southern California Retail Financial Executives.
