Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County celebrated its 5th annual Your Smile Matters: An Evening Honoring Leaders in Oral Health event on Thursday, Feb. 25 2010 to recognize the efforts of individuals dedicated to improving the oral health of children. Nearly 90 community leaders turned out at the Children's Health and Dental Center in Garden Grove to tour our facility and celebrate the evening's honorees. Marla Merhab Robinson of Merhab Robinson & Jackson LLC served as event chair.  This year's honorees included pediatric medical providers, Drs. Tracy Peck and Maria Tupas for their their continued support of oral health integration into the primary care model of medicine, Ruben H. Begino, DDS and Eric M. Sauk, DDS. In an emotional moment following the presentation of awards, the Healthy Smiles team gave a best wishes farewell to Director of Program Development Rocio Nunez-Magdaleno. Ms. Nunez-Magdaleno has been with our organization since its inception in 2003 and is leaving to accomplish new goals for the Coalition of Orange County Community Clinics. The yearly fundraiser coincides with National Children's Oral Health Month, a nationwide campaign sponsored by the American Dental Association to raise awareness of pediatric oral health. Monies raised from ticket proceeds, sponsorships and donations during this year's partner-building social benefited our USC/CHOC/Health Smiles Advanced Pediatric Dental Residency Program - the first of its kind in Orange County.  "This program provides opportunities for our dental residents to learn skills to work with patients, including children with special needs," says Healthy Smiles Senior Director of Operations Diane Limbo. In addition to a colorful PowerPoint presentation highlighting organizational growth, accomplishments and the smiling faces of our clinic's patients, guided tours of our Smile Mobile and Tooth Fairy Learning Center were given. Attendees which included Executive Director Mike Ruane, Children and Families Commission of Orange County and Diane Nguyen, representative of Supervisor Janet Nguyen, First District Orange County Board of Supervisors, networked and dined on heavy hor d'oeuvres and wine from Salisbury Vineyards.  Members of the USC Competition Cheer team were on hand to sell tickets for opportunity drawings which included prizes for golfing and spa retreats. Following the presentations of the 2010 Leadership in Children's Oral Health Awards to Dr. Tupas, Dr. Peck and Dr. Begino (Dr. Sauk was unable to attend), attendees were treated to an assortment of desserts to cap a wonderful evening celebrating leaps in children's oral health.
